What is LLM Optimisation

LLM optimisation for search marketing is work to improve how accurately AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews can find, describe and cite your business or content. The phrase can also mean improving model outputs or inference efficiency in machine learning through prompting, fine-tuning or deployment changes; this guide covers the marketing meaning. It includes technical access, useful answers, supporting evidence and measurement. I use it as part of my AI search optimisation service and do not promise that a particular assistant will recommend you.

What is LLM Optimisation?

LLM optimisation means improving a site's readiness for discovery and accurate use in answers from large language models. The term often overlaps with GEO and AEO. For a business, the useful questions are whether an assistant can access the relevant information, whether its answer is accurate and whether the resulting visits produce relevant enquiries.

Is LLM Optimisation the Same as Model Optimisation?

No. The phrase has two meanings and search results mix them. Engineers use "LLM optimisation" for changes to a model or how it runs. Marketers use it for changes to the websites and content that a model reads. US sources usually spell it "LLM optimization".

OpenAI's model optimization guide groups evaluations, prompt engineering and fine-tuning as ways to improve model output. Hugging Face describes quantization as storing a model's weights at lower precision to reduce its memory requirements. This guide is the wrong starting point for that engineering work.

How Do LLMs Decide What to Include in Their Answers?

An assistant may draw on knowledge learned during training, retrieve current sources, or combine the two. Which sources it can access depends on the product, mode and question. An answer generated without web access cannot test whether a new page is being found in live search.

Current web information is the part a site owner can update and inspect. Making a page accessible removes an obstacle; useful content and clear evidence give a reader something worth checking. Neither guarantees selection. My free SEO prompts can help you review the questions a page answers, but generated suggestions still need checking against real demand and sources.

How Does LLM Optimisation Differ from Traditional SEO?

Traditional SEO measures search exposure and visits. LLM optimisation also examines citations, brand mentions and recommendations in generated answers. These outcomes overlap, but they are different observations:

Answer clarity: Put the answer where a reader can find it, then explain the method and exceptions. A passage that names its subject and evidence is easier to quote accurately. There is no established rule that the shortest answer wins an AI citation.

A useful answer names its subject and keeps the evidence and main limitation close enough for a reader to check it.

From how LLM optimisation differs from traditional SEO

Entity accuracy: A consistent business name, service description and genuine external references help people verify who you are. My entity SEO guide covers this work. Consistency is useful information hygiene, rather than proof of citation preference.

Source evidence: Publish information you can support, with a named source or an explained first-hand method. A citation to your page can still support a recommendation for someone else, so record URL citations and brand recommendations separately.

What Makes Content LLM-Ready?

Content is ready for inspection when its answer, context and evidence are clear. My guide on optimising content for AI search shows how I check those details in a passage.

Factual precision with relevant data. If you report traffic growth, state the site or sample, dates, metric and source. A percentage without its starting value or period can mislead. Include numbers when they answer the question, rather than adding them to make a paragraph look authoritative.

Readable structure. Use headings to help readers navigate. Keep a process and its prerequisites together, or a comparison with its criteria. Some topics suit a short answer; others need connected explanation. A FAQ is useful only when the questions add something.

Coverage with a clear purpose. Answer the related questions needed to understand the topic. Decide whether to extend a page or create another from user intent and existing ownership. There is no universal advantage to one long guide over several distinct pages. My topical authority service starts with those relationships.

Technical access. Check the relevant search crawler, server response, rendering and indexation. Search and training crawlers have different roles. OpenAI documents separate crawlers. OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT's search features. GPTBot collects content that may be used to train its models. Each robots.txt setting is independent. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode and that no additional technical requirements apply. A technical SEO audit should identify an observed access fault before prescribing a fix.

How Do You Track LLM Visibility?

Track exposure, visits and enquiries separately. Bing's AI Performance report records citations across supported AI surfaces; its grounding queries are sampled retrieval phrases. Search Console's Generative AI report reports impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode. GA4 records identifiable assistant referral sessions, which are a different metric.

Manual checks add the answer itself: use repeated prompts, record the product, mode and date, and save what was actually returned. These are variable samples, not a census. In my portfolio I have observed citations on reference and troubleshooting pages with specific evidence. That correlation suggests questions to test; it does not establish which feature caused selection.

A citation, an assistant referral session and a qualified enquiry are separate outcomes. Measure each before deciding where to invest.

What Do LLM Optimisation Services Include?

An LLM optimisation service should start with measurement and a written scope. Ask for a prompt set, an access review, specific content fixes and repeat measurement of citations, brand mentions, referral visits and enquiries.

  • Prompt set: the buyer questions, markets, languages and platforms to check and the dates of each check.
  • Access review: crawler rules, indexation and rendering on the pages that matter commercially.
  • Content fixes: the named pages and passages to change and who implements each change.
  • Repeat measurement: the same prompts rerun on a schedule with citations and brand mentions recorded separately.

My AI Visibility Audit is a £1,500 fixed-fee audit with a published two-week delivery period. Fractional support starts from £1,500 a month and the audit fee is credited against the first month. Ask any provider which tasks sit outside its fee.

Is LLM Optimisation Worth Investing In Now?

Investment makes sense when you have relevant exposure or buyer questions and a practical improvement to test. Start by correcting inaccurate advice and access faults on existing valuable pages. Then assess recorded visits and actual enquiries against the time spent. My AI search statistics page gives dated context; it cannot forecast your site's return.
