Why most redesigns don't move the leads needle
Roughly half the redesign projects I'm asked to quote shouldn't be redesigns. The site itself isn't the problem — the SEO is, the content is thin, the conversion path is broken on one page, or the buyer profile has shifted and the messaging hasn't.
A redesign without a diagnosis ends up looking better and converting the same. Sometimes worse, because new design choices kill conversion patterns that were quietly working.
What I do instead: diagnose first, scope the fix, only redesign if redesign is the right answer.
The diagnosis I run before quoting a redesign
Free, thirty minutes, on a discovery call. I pull up:
- Search Console data — impressions, clicks, position over 16 months. Where the drop happened, what fell, what's still ranking.
- Your site — Core Web Vitals, mobile UX, schema, indexation, conversion path on the home and main service pages.
- Your competitors — top three for the main service queries, what they're doing differently.
- Analytics if available — sessions, conversions, bounce by landing page.
By the end of the call, I can usually tell you whether you need:
- A full website redesign — visual + structural + SEO. From £2,000.
- A landing page rebuild on the existing site — cheaper, sometimes solves the leads problem alone. £600-£1,500.
- A technical SEO audit and on-page fixes — no redesign needed. From £500.
- Ongoing maintenance — the site is fine, it just needs feeding.
I'd rather lose the redesign quote and recommend the cheaper fix than sell you a redesign that doesn't work.
Full redesign vs landing page rebuild vs ongoing maintenance
Three options at three price points:
| Scope | Best for | Approx price |
|---|---|---|
| Full redesign | Outdated brand, broken IA, leads dropped, platform unmaintainable | From £2,000 |
| Landing page rebuild | One or two pages doing the heavy lifting, conversion broken on those | £600-£1,500 |
| UX fixes only | Site fundamentally fine, conversion path needs tightening | £400-£800 |
| Ongoing maintenance | Site is fine, needs updates and small tweaks | £40/month |
Don't overspend if you don't need to. The redesign is the right answer about 50% of the time among the people who ask for one.
UX improvements that pay back fastest
If the site doesn't need a full redesign, the highest-ROI UX changes are usually:
- Move the phone number into the header. Click-to-call on mobile. Single biggest mobile conversion lever for service businesses.
- Cut contact form fields to three. Name, phone or email, message. Anything more drops conversion.
- State a starting price. "From £1,500" beats "Contact for a quote" by 20-40% on enquiry rate.
- Add a sticky CTA bar on mobile. Scrolling visitors should always have one tap to your primary action.
- Replace stock photography with real photos. Even mediocre real photos outperform polished stock.
- Tighten hero copy. What you do, who for, where. Three to five lines max.
- Add real testimonials with names. Not five-star ratings. Specific outcomes.
Most of these are part of the landing page rebuild scope at £600-£1,500. Some are ten-minute changes you can make in WordPress without me.
Landing page design for paid traffic and campaigns
Standalone landing pages — for Google Ads, Facebook campaigns, LinkedIn, email — need different design logic from organic-traffic pages.
What works:
- Single conversion goal per page (don't compete CTAs)
- Match between ad copy and page hero (otherwise quality score drops)
- Above-the-fold form with three fields
- Social proof in the first scroll
- FAQ section addressing the buyer's actual objections
- No header navigation (or muted) so visitors don't bounce sideways
- Schema for Service or Offer
Landing page builds typically £400-£800 each, depending on length. I'll usually do them in batches of three to five so the design system is consistent.
Maintenance packages — when to choose them over a rebuild
If the site is structurally fine — good platform, good UX, ranking somewhat — you may not need a redesign. You may need ongoing care.
The £40/month maintenance bundle covers:
- Plugin updates (security and feature)
- WordPress core updates
- Backup verification
- Uptime monitoring
- Security scanning
- Ten minutes/month of small content tweaks
The £600/month SEO retainer covers maintenance plus growth work — content briefs, on-page optimisation, ranking reports, monthly strategy calls.
Aatma — a real conversion-led redesign
Healthcare clinic, existing WordPress site, leads stagnant despite local search demand. Diagnosis showed:
- Local SEO architecture absent (no service area pages, weak GBP)
- Service pages were thin — under 400 words each
- No schema beyond default Yoast Article
- Phone number buried in the contact page footer
- Mobile conversion path broken
The redesign:
- Rebuilt with proper service architecture (each treatment got a proper page)
- Schema added — MedicalBusiness, MedicalProcedure, Physician, FAQPage
- GBP rebuilt and citations submitted
- Phone moved to header with click-to-call
- Real treatment photography replaced stock
Outcomes within five months: local pack visibility for the main treatment queries, organic traffic up year-on-year, enquiries up. Full numbers and methodology in the case study.

FAQs
Is a redesign the answer to my Google ranking drop? Probably not on its own. Algorithm penalties are usually content quality, E-E-A-T, or backlink issues. Run an algorithm update recovery audit before paying for a redesign.
Can you fix a Wix or Squarespace site without rebuilding? Limited. UX and content fixes, yes. Core Web Vitals and schema, partially. Full SEO retrofit usually requires moving off Wix.
How long does a UX fix sprint take? Two to three weeks from kickoff to launch.
Do I need new content for a UX rebuild? Often no — the existing copy can be tightened in place. The single biggest lever is usually structure, not new words.
