SEO Consultant for Architects

Most architecture practice websites are beautiful and invisible. I turn image-led portfolio sites into pages that rank for the project types and locations you actually want.

Architecture websites often show excellent work and give search engines almost nothing to understand. Full-screen photography, short project captions and JavaScript-heavy portfolios may impress a referred visitor while leaving the practice invisible for the services, sectors and locations it wants to win.

I turn that portfolio into a search structure without flattening the design or filling every page with generic copy. The work connects project type, service, sector and location. Each page has a defined job and the visual portfolio remains the proof.

Why Architecture Websites Struggle to Rank

Architecture websites struggle when the design assumes images can carry the whole explanation. Google can index an image but it still needs text, headings, links and page context to understand whether the project covers a listed building renovation, a school extension or a commercial fit-out.

Project pages often include a title, a gallery and a location. They omit the brief, constraints, planning route, services delivered and type of building. That leaves every project competing on an internal name which no prospective client searches.

The wider structure causes a second problem. Practices combine residential architecture, planning support, interior design and commercial work on one broad services page.

Search intent is different for each service. Sector buyers also look for evidence that the practice understands education, healthcare, workplace or heritage requirements.

Portfolio builders can add technical limits. Large uncompressed images slow the first view.

JavaScript transitions may hide links from the initial HTML. Infinite grids can leave deeper projects without a crawlable path. A beautiful template isn't useful when Google cannot reach or interpret the work behind it.

What an Architects SEO Consultant Does

An architects SEO consultant gives each service, project and location a clear role. The process starts with what the practice wants more of rather than a list of high-volume keywords with no commercial fit.

Service, sector and location architecture. I separate the core service pages from sector expertise and geographic coverage. Residential extensions may need a different path from commercial architecture or planning consultancy. A professional services SEO structure keeps those relationships clear without creating dozens of weak variations.

Project pages built around intent. I retain the photography and add the information a prospective client needs. The page explains project type, place, brief, constraints, process and the relevant service. Links then connect the project to its service and location page.

Image and Core Web Vitals work. I check image dimensions, compression, loading order, responsive formats and gallery behaviour. The goal isn't to make an architecture site visually plain. The goal is to stop presentation choices delaying the page or hiding important content.

On-page structure. Titles, descriptions, headings, internal links and schema need to describe the page accurately. On-page SEO is especially important when a practice has strong proof but weak labels around it.

Google Business Profile. I align categories, services, photography and local landing pages with the office and real service area. Reviews remain genuine and project information stays consistent across the profile and site.

What Clients Say

The SEO work delivered real results — I’m seeing more clicks compared to this time last year in Google Analytics, without having to spend loads on advertising. Super impressed.

We went from invisible in local pack to ranking in the top 3 for our main service terms within 5 months. The increase in enquiry rate was roughly 3×.

Sunny’s topical map approach was unlike any other SEO work we’d had before. Within 6 months we were ranking for terms we’d never appeared for.

Project Types and Search Intent

Project-led SEO works when pages reflect how different clients describe the job. A homeowner may search for an architect for an extension, renovation or planning application. A commercial client is more likely to search by sector, building use, procurement need or location.

Planning permission content often brings the largest informational audience. Useful pages can explain the process, likely documents, local constraints and when architectural input becomes valuable.

Those pages shouldn't promise approval. They should help a reader understand the route and lead into the service that supports it.

Listed buildings need separate treatment because conservation, consent and material choices shape the brief. Education, healthcare and commercial pages need proof from relevant projects rather than a generic claim that the practice works across every sector. I build the connections so project evidence supports the service page instead of sitting in an isolated gallery.

Local SEO for Architecture Practices

Local SEO for an architecture practice should reflect a real office and a credible working area. One office can serve several towns but that doesn't justify cloning the same page with each place name changed.

A Reading practice might have a primary office page for Reading and supporting coverage for Berkshire towns where it can show relevant knowledge or projects. Each useful location page needs distinct planning context, service demand, travel or meeting arrangements and links to appropriate work. Local SEO connects those pages with Google Business Profile rather than pretending the practice has offices it doesn't have.

I am based in Reading and work across Berkshire, so the example is practical rather than invented. The same structure applies UK-wide through remote consulting. A practice should be precise about where it is based, where it works and how clients engage.

Architecture SEO Questions

Do project portfolio pages help SEO?

Project portfolio pages help only when they include useful text, project type, location and process. Image galleries alone give search engines too little context and usually rank for nothing beyond a project name.

Should an architect target planning-permission keywords?

Yes. Informational planning content is often the highest-volume entry point for prospective clients and can feed enquiries when it connects clearly to the relevant architectural service.

How long before an architecture site sees results?

Architecture sites typically need 4 to 6 months to improve for local service terms. Competitive sector terms take longer because the practice needs stronger project evidence, content coverage and authority.
