What Is Included in the Monthly Retainer
Every client engagement is different — the industry, competition level, technical starting point, and in-house capacity all vary. But the core structure of every monthly retainer is consistent:
Strategy and Planning
Monthly strategy session (60 minutes). At the start of each month we review performance data together, assess what moved and what did not, and agree priorities for the next 30 days. You are part of the decisions — not handed a report to review alone.
Keyword and competitor monitoring. I track your target keyword cluster against your top three to five competitors weekly, identifying ranking movements, new entrant threats, and opportunity gaps as they emerge.
Topical authority planning. Where you are in your content programme determines what we plan. Early retainers focus on topical map execution — building the content architecture that signals comprehensive expertise. Later retainers shift to consolidation, optimisation, and expanding into adjacent clusters.
Technical SEO Oversight
Monthly technical review. I run a crawl-based check covering new indexation issues, Core Web Vitals changes, schema errors, and any infrastructure changes (hosting migrations, CMS updates, new pages) that could have introduced technical problems. Most months this is clean. When it is not, fixes are prioritised immediately.
Implementation guidance. Technical fixes are documented with developer-ready specifications — not vague recommendations. I work directly with your development team or, for simpler fixes, implement changes myself.
Content Architecture and Briefs
Content briefs per month (volume agreed at engagement start). Each brief covers: target keyword, semantic keyword cluster, search intent, recommended structure, internal linking opportunities, schema type, and E-E-A-T signals needed. A brief takes your writer from blank page to publishable in a fraction of the time — and the output ranks.
Content review and optimisation. Published content gets reviewed against ranking performance. Pages that plateau get analysed and refreshed. Pages that climb get internally linked to and supported with cluster content.
Reporting and Direct Access
Monthly report. Delivered on a consistent date covering: ranking movements for target keyword cluster, organic traffic trend, technical health summary, content published vs planned, and next month's priorities. Reports are designed to take ten minutes to read — not two hours.
Direct access throughout the month. Email, phone, or a brief call — no ticket system, no account manager relay. If you have a question, a decision to make, or a site change planned that has SEO implications, you contact me directly.
