Before You Book a Call — Read This First

Most SEO engagements fail because of mismatched expectations, not bad work. You expect specific outcomes by a specific date; the agency delivers activity reports. You expected the senior person; you got an account manager. You expected strategy; you got a keyword spreadsheet.

This page exists to eliminate that gap. By the time you finish reading it, you will know exactly what a monthly SEO retainer with me looks like, what it costs, what you need to bring, and whether it is genuinely the right fit for your business right now.

If it is not the right fit — I will tell you that on the call. I only take on clients I am confident I can help.

What Is Included in the Monthly Retainer

Every client engagement is different — the industry, competition level, technical starting point, and in-house capacity all vary. But the core structure of every monthly retainer is consistent:

Strategy and Planning

Monthly strategy session (60 minutes). At the start of each month we review performance data together, assess what moved and what did not, and agree priorities for the next 30 days. You are part of the decisions — not handed a report to review alone.

Keyword and competitor monitoring. I track your target keyword cluster against your top three to five competitors weekly, identifying ranking movements, new entrant threats, and opportunity gaps as they emerge.

Topical authority planning. Where you are in your content programme determines what we plan. Early retainers focus on topical map execution — building the content architecture that signals comprehensive expertise. Later retainers shift to consolidation, optimisation, and expanding into adjacent clusters.

Technical SEO Oversight

Monthly technical review. I run a crawl-based check covering new indexation issues, Core Web Vitals changes, schema errors, and any infrastructure changes (hosting migrations, CMS updates, new pages) that could have introduced technical problems. Most months this is clean. When it is not, fixes are prioritised immediately.

Implementation guidance. Technical fixes are documented with developer-ready specifications — not vague recommendations. I work directly with your development team or, for simpler fixes, implement changes myself.

Content Architecture and Briefs

Content briefs per month (volume agreed at engagement start). Each brief covers: target keyword, semantic keyword cluster, search intent, recommended structure, internal linking opportunities, schema type, and E-E-A-T signals needed. A brief takes your writer from blank page to publishable in a fraction of the time — and the output ranks.

Content review and optimisation. Published content gets reviewed against ranking performance. Pages that plateau get analysed and refreshed. Pages that climb get internally linked to and supported with cluster content.

Reporting and Direct Access

Monthly report. Delivered on a consistent date covering: ranking movements for target keyword cluster, organic traffic trend, technical health summary, content published vs planned, and next month's priorities. Reports are designed to take ten minutes to read — not two hours.

Direct access throughout the month. Email, phone, or a brief call — no ticket system, no account manager relay. If you have a question, a decision to make, or a site change planned that has SEO implications, you contact me directly.

The First 90 Days

The first three months of any SEO engagement are the most important. They set the technical foundation, establish the content architecture, and build the strategic understanding of your specific market.

Month 1 — Audit, strategy, and foundations.

The engagement opens with a comprehensive technical and content audit. I review your site's crawl health, indexation status, Core Web Vitals, existing content quality, current ranking profile, and competitor landscape in detail. This is not a tool-generated checklist — it is a manual assessment of your specific situation.

By the end of month one you will have: a prioritised technical fix list, a 12-month topical map, your first set of content briefs, and a clear assessment of your most immediate ranking opportunities. If there are quick wins — technical fixes that can improve rankings within weeks — those are actioned first.

Month 2 — Technical resolution and content launch.

Technical priorities from the audit are implemented. The first tranche of content briefs is delivered to your team (or produced directly, depending on your setup). We begin building the internal linking structure that concentrates authority toward your highest-value commercial pages.

Initial ranking movements are typically visible by the end of month two for lower-competition queries and longer-tail terms. These are leading indicators — not the main event.

Month 3 — Iteration and early signals.

By month three the technical foundation is stable, the first content cluster is live, and Google has had time to evaluate the changes. We review what is moving, analyse what is not, and refine the strategy accordingly.

Most clients see meaningful ranking improvements for mid-competition queries in this window. For highly competitive terms — particularly in professional services, legal, financial, and technology sectors — the 6–12 month window is realistic for page-one positions.

What Clients Say

The SEO work delivered real results — I’m seeing more clicks compared to this time last year in Google Analytics, without having to spend loads on advertising. Super impressed.

Dr Shaan Patel

Founder, Aatma Aesthetics · UK

Before working with Sunny, we were getting around 180 organic visits a month. Nine months later we’re at 620 and enquiries from organic have tripled.

James W.

Director · Reading

We went from invisible in local pack to ranking in the top 3 for our main service terms within 5 months. The increase in enquiry rate was roughly 3×.

Sarah M.

Partner, professional services firm · Berkshire

Sunny’s topical map approach was unlike any other SEO work we’d had before. Within 6 months we were ranking for terms we’d never appeared for.

Tom B.

MD, SaaS company · Thames Valley

The monthly reporting is clear, honest and always tied to actual business outcomes — not just vanity metrics.

TierMonthly InvestmentTypical Scope
Foundation£1,500/monthStrategy, monthly session, technical oversight, 2 content briefs, direct access

Accelerated£4,000/monthEverything in Growth + 8 content briefs, content review and refresh programme, weekly check-ins
Enterprise£5,000+/monthCustom scope for complex sites, multiple keyword clusters, or high-volume content programmes

Most small to medium businesses working with me are on the Growth tier. Professional services firms and technology companies with mature content programmes typically operate at Accelerated or above.

Initial project options — if you are not yet ready for a retainer, a technical SEO audit (from £500) or topical map (from £800) is the right starting point. These are standalone deliverables with no ongoing commitment required.

All retainers are monthly rolling — no minimum contract. Clients stay because the work compounds, not because they are locked in.

What You Need to Bring

The honest truth: I can develop the strategy, but organic growth requires execution capacity on your side.

Content production. The content briefs I produce are detailed and structured for efficient writing — but your team (or a writer we agree on) needs to produce the content. If you have no content production capacity, a retainer will underperform. We can discuss managed content production as an add-on.

Development access. Technical SEO fixes require someone who can make changes to your website. This might be your in-house developer, a freelancer, or your agency's dev team. You need this resource available on a reasonable turnaround — not a four-week ticket queue.

Decision-making authority. The monthly strategy sessions are collaborative. Someone in your business needs to be able to make decisions — approve content topics, sign off on site changes, set priorities — without a three-week approval chain.

A 6–12 month horizon. SEO compounds over time. The businesses that see the best results commit to the methodology for long enough to let it work. If you need search results within 8 weeks, paid search is the right tool — not SEO.

Why an Independent Consultant Rather Than an Agency

At an agency, a £2,500 monthly retainer covers: account management salary, office overhead, business development costs, junior staff time, and — if you are fortunate — occasional senior attention. The person who pitched you is working across 20 other accounts.

With an independent consultant, £2,500 buys senior-level strategy and direct implementation oversight — one person, focused, with a deliberately small client list.

The trade-off is scale: if you need thirty blog posts produced per month, you need a team. If you need rigorous strategy applied with genuine attention to your specific situation, an independent consultant delivers better value at this budget level.
