Magento — now Adobe Commerce — is one of the most powerful ecommerce platforms available. It handles complex catalogues, multi-store configurations, and enterprise-grade requirements that simpler platforms simply cannot match. But that power comes with serious SEO complexity. As a Magento SEO consultant, I help merchants unlock the organic search potential that their platform is actively suppressing through misconfiguration, bloated index pages, and technical debt.

If you are running a Magento store and your organic traffic has plateaued or declined, the problem almost certainly sits in the platform's technical layer. That is exactly where I work.

Why Magento needs specialist SEO

Magento is not like other ecommerce platforms. It was built for flexibility, not for SEO out of the box. The default installation creates thousands of indexable URLs that should never see a search engine, handles canonical tags inconsistently, and generates page speed issues that compound as your catalogue grows.

A generalist SEO agency will audit your site, flag the surface-level issues, and move on. A Magento SEO consultant understands the architecture underneath — the EAV database structure, the way layered navigation interacts with URL rewrites, and the specific server-side caching configurations that determine whether Googlebot can actually crawl your catalogue efficiently.

I have worked with Magento stores ranging from 500 to 200,000+ SKUs. The problems are consistent, but the solutions need to be tailored to each store's specific configuration, hosting environment, and commercial priorities. That is what specialist knowledge provides.

Common Magento SEO problems

Layered navigation generating thousands of URLs

This is the single most damaging SEO issue on Magento stores. Every filter combination — colour, size, price range, brand — generates a unique URL. A catalogue with 50 categories and 10 filterable attributes can easily produce hundreds of thousands of indexable pages, most with thin or duplicate content. Googlebot wastes its crawl budget on these pages instead of your actual product and category pages.

Configurable product duplicates

Magento creates separate URLs for simple products linked to configurable products. Without proper canonical handling, Google indexes both the parent configurable product and each child simple product, diluting ranking signals across multiple near-identical pages.

Slow page speed

Magento 2 improved on Magento 1, but default installations still load slowly. Unoptimised images, excessive JavaScript, third-party extensions adding render-blocking resources, and misconfigured full-page cache all contribute. Core Web Vitals failures directly impact rankings, and Magento stores are disproportionately affected.

Complex multi-store and multi-language setups

Magento's multi-store capability is a commercial advantage, but it creates SEO headaches. Incorrect hreflang implementation, duplicate content across store views, and inconsistent URL structures across locales can tank international visibility. If you operate across multiple markets, I would recommend reading about my international SEO consultant services for the broader strategic picture.

Poor default canonical handling

Magento's default canonical tag behaviour is unreliable. Products accessible via multiple category paths often receive incorrect or missing canonicals. Category pages with applied filters may self-canonicalise when they should point to the unfiltered parent. These issues compound silently, and most store owners only discover them after a significant traffic drop.

What Clients Say

The SEO work delivered real results — I’m seeing more clicks compared to this time last year in Google Analytics, without having to spend loads on advertising. Super impressed.

Before working with Sunny, we were getting around 180 organic visits a month. Nine months later we’re at 620 and enquiries from organic have tripled.

We went from invisible in local pack to ranking in the top 3 for our main service terms within 5 months. The increase in enquiry rate was roughly 3×.

Sunny’s topical map approach was unlike any other SEO work we’d had before. Within 6 months we were ranking for terms we’d never appeared for.

My Magento SEO services

As your Magento SEO consultant, I provide targeted technical services designed specifically for the platform's architecture.

Technical audit

A comprehensive technical SEO audit of your Magento store covering crawlability, indexation, internal linking, schema markup, page speed, and content duplication. I use log file analysis alongside crawl data to understand exactly how Googlebot interacts with your store — not just what a crawler simulation suggests.

Crawl budget optimisation

For large catalogues, crawl budget is a genuine ranking factor. I identify and resolve the URL bloat caused by layered navigation, search result pages, and parameter-based URLs. This typically involves a combination of robots.txt rules, meta robots directives, canonical tag corrections, and strategic use of the Magento URL rewrite system.

Hreflang for multi-store

Proper hreflang implementation across Magento store views, ensuring each locale serves the correct language and currency signals to Google. This includes handling edge cases like partially translated catalogues and region-specific product availability.

Product schema at scale

Implementing structured data across thousands of products manually is not feasible. I configure automated Product, Offer, AggregateRating, and Breadcrumb schema that pulls directly from your Magento product attributes, ensuring accuracy at scale without ongoing manual maintenance.

Category page strategy

Category pages are often your highest-value organic landing pages. I optimise category page content, internal linking hierarchies, and faceted navigation handling to ensure these pages rank for commercial intent keywords rather than being cannibalised by filtered variations.

Magento 1 to 2 migration SEO

Magento 1 reached end of life in 2020, yet many stores still run on it or have recently migrated with SEO as an afterthought. I handle URL mapping, redirect strategies, and post-migration audits to preserve your existing organic equity during the transition to Magento 2 or Adobe Commerce.

Magento vs Shopify vs WooCommerce SEO

Each platform has distinct SEO characteristics. Magento offers the most control but demands the most technical expertise. Shopify simplifies many SEO tasks but limits what you can customise — if you are on Shopify, my Shopify SEO consultant service covers platform-specific optimisation. WooCommerce sits in the middle, offering flexibility through plugins but introducing its own set of conflicts and performance issues.

Magento is the right choice for large catalogues, complex business logic, and multi-store operations. But that choice only pays off when the SEO fundamentals are properly configured. Most Magento stores I audit are leaving significant organic revenue on the table because of technical issues that have been present since launch.

How we work

I operate as a specialist Magento SEO consultant, either working directly with your development team or alongside your existing agency. The process follows a clear structure:

  1. Discovery call — I learn about your store, catalogue size, current organic performance, and commercial goals.
  2. Technical audit — A thorough crawl and log file analysis of your Magento installation, delivered as a prioritised action document.
  3. Implementation support — I work with your developers to implement fixes correctly. Magento SEO changes often require backend configuration, not just frontend tweaks, so developer collaboration is essential.
  4. Monitoring and iteration — Post-implementation tracking to measure impact and identify the next round of optimisation opportunities.

This fits within my broader SEO consulting approach — data-driven, technically rigorous, and focused on measurable organic revenue growth.
